21 MAY 2001: ‘I know it’s crazy but my family and are going to carry our symbolic Zulu calabash around the world along the Capricorn line. As we did on our previous Cape to Cairo expedition, we’ll fill it at the beginning and empty it at the end of each of the Capricorn continents.
Indian Ocean seawater from the Tropic of Capricorn will be carried across Mozambique (as we dodge the landmines), past the man-eating lions in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, and on through Botswana and Namibia. Once we’re across the vast Namib-Naukluft the calabash will be emptied into the Atlantic, where the giant red sand dunes of the ancient Namib Desert fall into the sea.
Then it’s on to South America, through Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile’s Atacama Desert — driest place on planet earth. After that, we battle the great parallel sand ridges of the Simpson Desert in Australia and trek through the forests of Madagascar. Finally, we come back to Inhambane, on the Mozambican coast — the very point from which we’re starting — for the end of the expedition. How strange it feels knowing that we’ll head west, around the globe, only to return to this same spot in well over a year’s time. Hope we make it!’
