” Elsa Joubert se eerste novelle Ons wag op die kaptein verskyn nadat sy op 15 Maart 1961 ’n berig in Die Transvaler lees van twaalf mense wat in Angola op ’n plaas deur ’n terroristebende aangehou word. Hierdie mense se verhoor word drie keer uitgestel terwyl die bende wag op die kaptein wat oor die rivier sou kom, en dan word hulle vermoor. Die uitgerekte wag op die koms van die kaptein impliseer ’n apokaliptiese element.
Die roman vertel die verhaal hoofsaaklik uit die oogpunt van ’n vrou (Ana-Paula) wat haar ’n klompie jare tevore as bruid in ’n liefdelose huwelik by ’n man (Carlos Figueira) in Angola aangesluit het. Nadat sy vanuit Lissabon by Carlos aangesluit het, vind sy uit dat hy twee basterkinders het uit ’n verhouding met die swart vrou Nga, terwyl sy geen kind van haar eie kan hê nie. Hoewel sy ’n ander liefdesverhouding aanknoop, voel sy nie dat sy daar hoort nie en slyt haar dae in bitterheid en wanhoop.
Hierdie roman word deur Klaas Steytler in Engels vertaal onder die titel To die at sunset en dit word ook tot ’n toneelstuk verwerk.
