Pieterse se nagelate roman speel af in die hart van Afrika. Sy kenmerkende humor loop hand aan hand met erns en besinning. Die reis begin in 1871 wanneer Dennis Chipman by Algoabaai aan wal gaan. Met sy agtpondergeweer en sy Ierse terrier trek hy saam met transportryers noordwaarts. Teen die Zambezi draai hy wes om die kronkels en stroomversnellings te verken. Waar die Zambezi sy boggel maak, is dit nog eens noordwaarts deur die oewerruigtes. Vier geslagte later maak sy naamgenoot weer kamp aan die Zambezi, by Manaka – Plek van die Horings. Maar die sendelinge maak ook op Manaka aanspraak – en almal moet nog verby die khuta kom – in tonele waarin Pieterse se humor opnuut sy lesers se harte steel. Nie ver van Manaka af nie, haak die vierde Chipman se boot in Liabwa la Twelve vas. In die meesterlike ontknoping en slottonele loop die Chipmans en die Mulambwas se paaie na meer as 'n eeu weer saam. Pieter Pieterse se reis het op 17 Maart 2002 geeindig toe hy grusaam om die lewe gebring is in die land wat hy geken en liefgehad het.
